bottrop.php v1.0

Posted on January 24, 2008 at 08:02 PM

bottrop.php is a simple spam trap for MediaWiki based sites. If you run such a site, and find yourself annoyed by spam bots, give it a shot.

Hi there - I’d come over to talk to you aboug a project I have in mind, something I’ve been working towards for a while: to wikify WordPress. But I was gratified (over-joyed?) to find this fix …

I walked through the instructions. the .php is in place (with both values added), and LocalSettings has been edited.

I did a random edit on my UserProfile Discussion page, by entering “random edit”.

And there it was.

I saw no difference in functionality, and no difference in operation. I saw nothing.

I can’t tell how it works, so I can’t tell what it’s not doing.

cheers

p.s. if the wiki/blog thing interests you at all, please email me, do!

Ohhhhh I see, now. “Anonymous edit” … ah, yes.

But, you see, I hardly ever get anonymous edits.

I get swamped by bots (or people?) who register and then spam.

Maybe only 20 or 30 pages in a 7 day period, but still a bother.

cheers

Heya,

(late response :P I should check for comments more often)

The script I wrote is only effective in preventing automated spam, which can become quite the pain in the arse when they’ve locked on to your site, doing 20+ edits per day. It does this by fumbling with the submit form in ways most bots can’t handle, but pretty much all humans using normal browsers will not notice, at all (That’s by design, since bothering users with things like CAPTCHAS is, in my opinion, a great way to stop actual users from participating). It can’t do anything to prevent real people from spamming your site. I could (And should) do this to the sign up form as well, though - or just not disable it for registered users (I don’t even know anymore why it’s disable for them - probably because my wiki didn’t get any spam from bots that register)…. this might stop your bot problem for good. Maybe I’ll add a setting to do that (Or, you could do it yourself if you can), but I’m busy with other things for the rest of the week. If I do anything, I’ll let you know.

I don’t think I quite understand what you mean by the wiki / blog thing, though…

how does this bottrop.php works?.. is there is difference from captcha to filter the automated postings to real human?..

Yes, there is.

A captcha requires the user to actually do something, to enter a word from an image. This method does not require the user to do anything. It’s completely transparent to the user.

This trick is well used to protect the web page from spamming..

Actually, I think the effect of the extension was just to break anonymous editing completely, which itself has curtailed spam quite a bit - but it might be better to disable anonymous editing the usual way, since the extension doesn’t attempt to spamcheck registered users anyway, and is essentially useless.

Of course it does, but blocking the spam far outweighs any inconvenience it might cause.

I honestly think the best way to do it would be a registered edit only wiki, but I don’t know how people would object to that.

Most of the unregistered edits are either spammers. I think that should be take care..

Uh, no. You’re wrong. Unregistered editing is not blocked at all. Also, what’s with the spam names?

(Editing out the URL, eh.)
